(1948; Italy) In 1970, Miuccia Prada takes a degree in Politics from the University of Milan and in the meantime she studies mime at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan. In 1971 she joins the family business, founded by Mario Prada in 1913, to follow the accessories production. Her first success was the innovative use of materials and in 1985 she creates a collection of simple and modern gloss black bags made of the nylon of the parachute. The collection meets with instant commercial success.
On the other hand her first prêt-à-porter line dates back to 1989 and it is characterized by a clear and elegant line, in sharp contrast to the flamboyant style of the other designers. Miuccia focuses on an “unusual” elegance , comfortable and sophisticated at the same time, this contributes to a rapid growth in popularity of the brand. Later in New York City is exposed to the prestigious MoMA the innovative nylon backpack and this gave to the company the opportunity to expand in the U.S. buying a new market.
In 1999, she becomes patroness with Patrizio Bertelli of a new challenge: the launch of Luna Rossa, the boat with which the Prada team won the prestigious Louis Vuitton Cup 2000 awarding the right to face the Defender Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup.
Her commitment and the attention to the many aspects of the cultural life in Milan consolidate in the support as a founding member of the Teatro alla Scala Foundation; she also becomes a member of the Fai contributing actively to the restoration and the enhancement of Environment.
The continuous testing of materials and the original aesthetic innovation, see that in 2000 she gets the Honorary Doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London, one of the most prestigious art and design schools in the world.
