The meaning of the gouache paint comes from being able to mix the different colors to form other uniformed ones. To create different effects it can be mixed with eggs, water and glue. One gouache effect that is used is the “thin gouache” and is made up of water, vegetable and animal fat. The “fat gouache” is made up of oil and when painting with it shows more color than the other. To create lighter colors and effects you can mix the gouache paint with milk, wine, or beer, as they are all very resistant on the paper and have a tendency to dry faster. After using these techniques they are virtually impermeable and long lasting.
Generally, synthetic paint brushes are used or natural bristle brushes, 01/03 and Michelangelo paper.
